A five year initiative to support the growth of girls\u2019 and women\u2019s baseball throughout the United States and Internationally. Often a lack of support will push a girl to play another sport or quit baseball all together. Feeling as though a player is \u201caging out\u201d after Little League or not socially connecting on all boy teams once middle school starts, are only some of the obstacles a girl faces trying to stay committed to baseball.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Grand Valley State University Digital Collections: All-American Girls Professional Baseball League Interviews<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League was started by Philip Wrigley, owner of the Chicago Cubs, during World War II to fill the void left by the departure of most of the best male baseball players for military service. The League gave over 600 women athletes the opportunity to play professional baseball. Many of the players went on to successful careers, and the league itself provided an important precedent for later efforts to promote women’s sports.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The Louise Pettus Archives and Special Collections at Winthrop University is fortunate to have a burgeoning collection of material pertaining to the AAGPBL. The collection was begun in 2005 with the gift of Elizabeth \u201cLib\u201d Mahon\u2019s papers and later acquired\u00a0acquired Jean Faut\u2019s Papers.
