This exhibit, curated by Tanith Harley of Australia, highlights the life and career of local young woman, Leona Kearns, of West Union.  Leona was a member of the Philadelphia Bobbies baseball team. This was one of the leading female baseball teams of the 1920’s and 1930’s. They got their name by wearing their hair cut into bobs. Leona went to Japan in 1925 with the team to play in numerous exhibition games. However, when the team began playing poorly, the team sponsors backed out leaving the girls stranded in Japan with no money and no way to return home. Finally, with money raised and sent from home, Leona and three other girls were able to buy tickets home aboard the Empress of Asia. On the way back, the ship encountered a violent storm. A large wave rose and swept Leona and another girl, Nellie Shank, overboard. Nellie was found clinging to a rail, but Leona was never found.
